Girls of Storm and Shadow Book Blog Tour

GoSaS

Hey lovelies,

Today is my stop on the Girls of Storm and Shadow book blog tour. It’s such an honour to be included on this one, especially because I loved this novel so much and Natasha Ngan is such a sweet person, so I’m very happy to be bringing my contribution to the table today to help promote the book.

Usually, I would post a review for this book for my tour entry. However, since I already raved about this book back in August, I thought that instead I could do a spotlight section on the novel.

From Goodreads: Lei and Wren have escaped their oppressive lives in the Hidden Palace, but soon learn that freedom comes with a terrible cost.

Lei, the naive country girl who became a royal courtesan, is now known as the Moonchosen, the commoner who managed to do what no one else could. But slaying the cruel Demon King wasn’t the end of the plan—it’s just the beginning. Now Lei and her warrior love Wren must travel the kingdom to gain support from the far-flung rebel clans. The journey is made even more treacherous thanks to a heavy bounty on Lei’s head, as well as insidious doubts that threaten to tear Lei and Wren apart from within.

Meanwhile, an evil plot to eliminate the rebel uprising is taking shape, fueled by dark magic and vengeance. Will Lei succeed in her quest to overthrow the monarchy and protect her love for Wren, or will she fall victim to the sinister magic that seeks to destroy her?

When I got a copy of Girls of Paper and Fire [book one] in a Fairyloot box I knew this series would be right up my street. I loved the tension, the worldbuilding, the romance, the characters. Every element was so carefully and beautifully executed. Girls of Storm and Shadow follows the same trend. Lei is probably one of my favourite YA protagonists ever. She’s so kind and brave and just amazing really in so many ways. And she felt like a real person. The characters in this book really stand out for me, and I know I’m going to be so nervous going into book three to find out what happens to everyone. I really care about them, in a ‘I’ll throw my book across the room if any of these people die’ kind of way.

I also love how much Ngan isn’t afraid to talk about some of the realities of dating. Even when you love someone, sometimes things are hard and some choices are difficult to make. People argue, they get jealous, they get some feelings hurt. Being with a person is a choice, and I loved that this book actually delves into this idea. I’ve read a lot of YA books which gloss over the realities of romance and kind of just sugar-coat everything and make it sound perfect, and I think this is kind of unhealthy. So it’s such a breath of fresh air to get a book which hones in on this, and shows the complexities of love. And it added so much to the story. I loved how often it kept me on the edge of my seat. How nervous it made me.

In my review of Girls of Storm and Shadow I gave the book nine stars. If you want to check out the full review, you can do so here.
