Pokemon Types Book Tag
Hey everyone,
So today I thought I’d make my own book tag, and figured I would combine my love of the Pokemon video games with some bookish fun. I know there’s a Pokemon Go tag already out there, but I thought we’d do something a little unique so we’re going to do it based on the original types, rather than individual pokemon. I’ve chosen ten of them to include here and will tag some people at the bottom if they feel like joining in [although if anyone else wants to, you are more than welcome to.]
ICE TYPE: A book that gave you chills
For this one, I picked The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. The descriptions were just breath-taking and the whole ghost element to it was really up my street. I loved every second of it so so much, and I can’t wait to see it come onto Netflix somewhere down the line.
ELECTRIC TYPE: A book with a shocking twist
I picked One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus. I won’t explain the plot twist, because so many spoilers, but it’s basically a whodunnit where one kid dies in detention and the murderer is in the room. I didn’t see the ending coming and it was glorious.
FIRE TYPE: A book with a hot romance
Could I have picked anything other than A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. That romance was not suitable for young readers levels of hot.
DRAGON TYPE: A book that was really awesome
For this one, I picked It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne. I loved how it analysed the ways in which we consume rom-com movies and how the relationships they show are problematic in the way they idealise certain things, or how they gloss over the realities of a real-life relationship.
FIGHTING TYPE: A book with lots of action
I picked The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman since it features lots of demon hunting and Victorian ladies and gentlemen fighting bad guys.
GHOST TYPE: A book that scared you
Hmm, this one is a bit tricky. I haven’t yet read a YA book that genuinely scared me [unless you count being in constant fear of your OTP or favourite character dying] so I’m going to pick an adult book instead. It would be wrong of me to pick any author other than the master of horror, Stephen King, so I’m going with The Shining.
FLYING TYPE: A book that took you away
I’m picking Unconventional by Maggie Harcourt. I totally loved the comic-con setting and it drew me into the book. Not to mention the gloriously fluffy romance.
GRASS TYPE: A book with elemental magic
For this, I picked Truthwitch by Susan Dennard since lots of people in this series have magic powers linked to elements.
ROCK/GROUND TYPE: A solid recommendation
I picked Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo for this one, since I recommend it to pretty much all of my friends. I think it has a really nice balance of action, humour, character, world-building and plot, and although there’s some romance there’s not too much, which means it’s good to recommend to people who usually pull a face when I bring up YA books.
WATER TYPE: A book that features the sea
Okay, I had to admit that picking this one was pretty hard, but in the end I went for To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo.
BUG TYPE: A book that annoyed you
For this one, I think I’ll go with Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. There were just so many cliches and tropes in this book and it bugged me. Pun intended.
PSYCHIC TYPE: A book with some really cool magic powers
Well, for this one it has to be Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone. The magic was just so awesome and I loved every moment of it.
POISON TYPE: A book that gave you a book hangover
This one is really tough. In the end, I went for the Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine, because it was just so amusing and I wasn’t ready for it to end and I ended up in a bit of a reading slump because I wanted more of the series, rather than other books.
NORMAL TYPE: A book you felt a bit meh about.
I opted for S.T.A.G.S. by M.A. Bennett. There’s nothing all that wrong with it, but in retrospect I just didn’t feel much for this book.
Sooooo what did you all think of this list? I’m going to tag some people so if they feel like taking part, they totally should [although you really don’t have to do all the types, just pick your faves]. And if I haven’t named you but you wanna take part, feel free to join in. Use the tag Pokemon Types Tag when you post to get involved 😀

I love that you included “It Only Happens in the Movies”! I love that book and I don’t know many who have read it. I asked my library to order a copy and a lot of other Holly Bourne books, which I’m so glad I did 🙂
